The footprint of humanity on the Earth is unfortunately a massive one. So big that experts now agree that humanity’s impact on the planet is so profound that it is time to declare a new geologic epoch – the Anthropocene. Examples of this impact are the radioactive elements dispersed across the planet by nuclear testing, plastic pollution and the soot produced by fossil-fuel power stations. These and other adverse effects are illustrated in exquisite detail on Anthropocene, the 2018 edition of our ever-popular Silver Niobium coins.
Beginning at the end of the Ice Age, some 11,700 years ago, the subdivision of the Quaternary geologic period, during which all human civilisation developed, is known as the Holocene. The partly scientific, partly philosophical concept of the Anthropocene is effectively a continuation of the Holocene under a symbolic new name. Different shades of green are used in the coin’s niobium core to illustrate this concept. Humanity and its huge footprint on the planet dominate either side of the coin’s two-tone green niobium core, while humanity’s adverse effects on planet Earth are shown in the silver outer ring of Anthropocene.
eben wir schon längst im Anthropozän? Die Silber-Niob-Münze 2018 illustriert, welche Aktivitäten des modernen Menschen große Veränderungen des Systems Erde bewirkt haben. Unser Fußabdruck auf der Erde ist groß und tief geworden. Werden wir es in Zukunft schaffen, sanfter aufzutreten?
Der globale Wandel
Befinden wir uns gar nicht mehr im Holozän, der bisher jüngsten Epoche der Erdgeschichte? Begonnen hat es erst vor 11700 Jahren, nach dem Ende der letzten Eiszeit.
Um der Tatsache gerecht zu werden, dass die Aktivitäten von uns Menschen große Veränderungen des Systems Erde und aller seiner Sphären bewirkt haben und bewirken, sprechen viele Wissenschafter davon, dass ein neues Zeitalter bereits angebrochen wäre: das Anthropozän. Geprägt hat den Begriff der Chemie-Nobelpreisträger Paul Crutzen, um damit vor dem durch den Menschen verursachten globalen Wandel zu warnen; man denke an Klimaerwärmung, an den Anstieg des Meeresspiegels oder die Umweltverschmutzung.
Von Max Frisch gibt es eine Erzählung, die den Titel trägt: „Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän“. Man möchte anfügen: Verschwindet er im nach ihm benannten Zeitalter?
Die Münze
Der Silberring auf der Wertseite zeigt Lebewesen aus verschiedenen Erdzeitaltern: ein Ammonitfossil (Trias), einen Vertreter aus der Familie der Tarsophlebiidae (Jura); einen Triceratops (Kreide); eine Säbelzahnkatze (Tertiär); einen Mammut und einen Mensch (Quartär) sowie das Wort Anthropozän.
Im Niob-Innenteil sieht man Fußabdrücke auf der Weltkugel (Europa und Teile Asiens und Afrikas); sie symbolisieren die Spuren, die wir Menschen auf unserem Planeten bereits hinterlassen haben.
Auf der anderen Seite rückt auf dem Niob-Innenteil der Mensch in den Mittelpunkt. Dieser ist von zwei Laubbäumen flankiert. Im Hintergrund die Weltkugel (Amerika).
Im Ring sind, rechts beginnend, dann im Uhrzeigersinn, zu sehen: eine Fabrik (steht für die Industrie); Pflanzenreihen (Monokulturen); Atommeiler und Strommast (Energie), das Logo PET01 (Kunststoff Polyethylenterephthalat und Recycling-Code).
Anschließend wird der Klimawandel angesprochen: Wassertropfen (Überschwemmungen, Anstieg des Wasserspiegels sowie Gletscherschmelze), Schneekristalle (Schmelzen der Polkappen), Thermostat (Erderwärmung); ein verdorrter Baumstumpf; CO2 (Kohlenstoffdioxid-Emissionen); ausgetrocknete Erde.
– So facettenreich das Thema, so vielfältig die Motive auf der Silber-Niob-Münze „Anthropozän“.

2 Euro Weltbienentag 2 euro SLOVENIE 2018 - Journée Mondiale des abeilles
En 2018, la première journée mondiale des abeilles va être célebrée suite à une intiative slovène. En effet, la Slovénie est un pays où l'apiculture est très importante grace au travail d'Anton Jansa au XVIIIe siècle qui a travaillé à la mise en place de l'apiculture moderne. C'est le seul pays européen où on y trouve une espèce indigène d'abeille protégée. A cette occasion, la Slovénie a choisi de commémorer cette journée avec un visuel où la Terre est faite de rayons de miel. Le dessin a été choisi à la suite d'un concours lancé par la Banque de Slovénie de mars à mai 2017. Trente-six propositions ont été reçues pour cette pièce. Le choix final a été effectué par le gouvernement sur les recommandations d'une commission mise en place par la banque nationale et le ministre des finances et dévoilé en août 2017.

The Idols of Sport series, which pays tribute to great Portuguese sporting heroes, continues this year with a coin designed by illustrator André Carrilho dedicated to Carlos Lopes, renowned in the world of long distance athletics, who won the 10 thousand metres silver medal at the Montreal Olympics in 1976, and gold in the marathon at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, setting a new olimpic record at the time.
A série Ídolos do Desporto, que presta homenagem às grandes figuras do desporto português, prossegue este ano com uma moeda desenhada pelo ilustrador André Carrilho dedicada a Carlos Lopes, uma referência no atletismo de longa distância, que conquistou a medalha de prata nos 10 mil metros nos Jogos Olímpicos de Montreal, em 1976, e a medalha de ouro na maratona nos Jogos Olímpicos de Los Angeles, em 1984, batendo então o melhor tempo olímpico da prova.

Worshipped by Christians and Jews for his special healing powers, archangel Raphael is the inspiration for the third coin in our interfaith Guardian Angels series. The talismanic properties of Raphael – The Healing Angel encompass both the body and the soul since Raphael watches over us when we travel, helps us heal and boosts our vitality.

The prototype guardian angel, Raphael is also an archangel in Islam. According to the Christian Old Testament story, Tobias and the Angel, which appears in the Book of Tobit, Raphael gave special healing powers to Tobias in the form of the vital organs of the fish that had attacked the young man in the River Tigris. On the 10 euro Proof quality silver coin’s obverse, the fish is shown crossed with a pilgrim’s staff inside the letter R, which is surrounded by the coin’s rich green grapevine design. The obverse shows an 1862 portrait of Raphael by an artist of the English School. This shows the patron saint of travellers – who is also said to watch over pilgrims – as a young man with tousled hair and wings of peacock feathers, one hand holding a pilgrim’s staff, the other raised in a blessing.
Die dritte Münze unserer Serie „Himmlische Boten“ ist Raphael gewidmet, dem Urbild eines Schutzengels. Die vermutlich um 200 vor Christus verfasste Geschichte von Tobias und dem Engel zählt zu den Spätschriften des Alten Testaments.
Tobias und der Engel
„Tobias ging auf die Suche nach einem Begleiter und traf dabei Raphael. Raphael war ein Engel, aber Tobias wusste es nicht. Als der junge Tobias im Fluss baden wollte, schoss ein Fisch aus dem Wasser hoch und wollte ihn verschlingen. Der Engel rief Tobias zu: Pack ihn! Da packte der junge Mann zu und warf den Fisch ans Ufer.“ (Buch Tobit 5,4 bzw. 6, 1–9) – In der Folge erwiesen sich dessen Innereien als überaus wirkungsvolle Medizin.

Die Münze
Das Münzmotiv zeigt den Engel Raphael als Jüngling mit gewelltem Haar und Pilgerstab. Den Arm hält er abgewinkelt, die Hand hat er segnend gehoben; seine Flügel bestehen aus Pfauenfedern. – Diese dritte Münze unserer Serie „Himmlische Boten“ ist dem Urbild eines Schutzengels gewidmet. Raphael ist der Schutzpatron der Pilger und der Reisenden; er wird von Christen wie von Juden als ein Engel verehrt, der besondere Heilkräfte besitzt.

In continuation of the cycle referring to the “Ages of Europe”, which reflects some of the most significant European artistic movements, the theme for the Europe series in 2018 is the baroque, an artistic style renowned for its splendour and exuberance that emerged during 17th and 18th centuries. The Portuguese coin, designed by sculptor António Marinho, mixes religion with the profane with recognised features of the baroque style. On the coin a cherub - a spiritual element - is seen alongside a wealth of ornaments and the image of a shell with precious stones, symbols of material wealth.
Dando continuidade ao ciclo alusivo às «Idades da Europa», que reflete alguns dos mais importantes movimentos artísticos europeus, a série Europa, em 2018, tem por tema o Barroco, um estilo artístico que se distingue pelo esplendor e pela exuberância e que teve o seu auge nos séculos XVII e XVIII. A moeda portuguesa, desenhada pelo escultor António Marinho, mescla o religioso e o profano, aspetos reconhecidos no estilo Barroco, onde um Querubim, elemento espiritual, convive com a exuberância dos ornamentos e a imagem de uma concha com pedras preciosas, símbolos de riqueza material.

In 2018, Russia hosts the final phase of the 21st Football World Cup, a competition organised by FIFA, gathering 32 nations from the five continents around in what is considered as the most popular sport in the world. Portugal’s first match during this final phase will be against Spain on 15 June, and the Portuguese have high hopes of the Quinas’ team, the current holders of the European title. To mark this major sports event, the Portuguese Mint minted a commemorative collector coin with a face value of 2.5 euros, created by sculptor João Duarte. Notes: Normal finishing coins are produced to enter into circulation and obtained with high speed coining and packaging processes. The contact between the coins of each batch might induce small scratches on the surface. These scratches are not admissible as cause for a complaint. Any other complaint due to defects on these coins has to be evaluated on a case by case basis.
Em 2018, a Rússia acolhe a fase final 21.ª edição do Campeonato do Mundo de Futebol, uma competição organizada sob a égide da FIFA, que junta 32 nações dos cinco continentes em torno daquele que é considerado o «desporto rei». A estreia da Portugal nesta fase final vai acontecer frente à Espanha, a 15 de junho, e os portugueses depositam grandes esperanças na Seleção das Quinas, atual detentora do título europeu. Para assinalar este grande evento desportivo, a Casa da Moeda cunhou uma moeda de coleção comemorativa com o valor facial de 2,50 Euro da autoria do escultor João Duarte. Observações: As moedas de acabamento normal destinam-se a entrar em circulação e são produzidas com recurso a processos de cunhagem e embalagem de alta velocidade que podem provocar riscos na superfície devido ao contacto entre as moedas de cada lote. Estes riscos não são aceites como fundamento para reclamação. Qualquer outro tipo de defeito neste tipo de moedas será sujeito a análise específica.

Maria I, a Imprensa Nacional passou a ser responsável pela edição da Gazeta de Lisboa, antecessora do atual Diário da República, o jornal oficial do País, atualmente editado e disponibilizado eletronicamente como um serviço público de acesso universal e gratuito, dando a conhecer os atos que regem a vida da sociedade portuguesa. Para assinalar estes 250 anos de história da editora pública, ao serviço dos cidadãos, da cultura e da língua portuguesa, é cunhada uma moeda corrente comemorativa da autoria do designer Eduardo Aires.

collector coins to mark the bi-centenary on 14 January 2018 of the birth Zacharias Topelius, a Finnish novelist and influential figure in society.
Zacharias Topelius (14 January 1818-12 March 1898) is still remembered today as a master storyteller and as a lyricist of best-loved Christmas carols. Topelius was not only a distinguished novelist and poet, but also a journalist, historian and rector of the University of Helsinki.
Topelius wrote insightful interpretations of social phenomena and structures, as seen for example in Välskärin kertomuksia (Tales of a Barber-Surgeon), one of his best-known novels. The reverse of the collector coin features an image of Topelius and the sparrows in his tales. The obverse of the coin is a reference to Topelius’s Koivu ja tähti (The Birch and the Star) fairytale.

The Sami Culture commemorative coin highlights the close relationship that the Sami people enjoy with nature. The silver Sami Culture commemorative coin will be released on Sami National Day, 6 February 2018.
The Sámi Culture commemorative coin pays tribute to the Sámi people’s special relationship with nature. The traditional Sami territory, Sápmi, is spread over the territories of four states. There are approximately 10,000 Sami people living in Finland.
The reverse of the commemorative coin reminds us of the power of the sun in regulating the Sami year. The Sami are children of the sun – the moment when the first rays of the sun break through after the long polar night is still emotional to them.
Sami fishing culture is vibrant, and the obverse of the commemorative coin depicts a traditional form of fishing, juomustus, or net fishing beneath the ice. The triangles featured on the commemorative coin are a common shape and motif in the Sami community, symbolising, for example, the traditional Sami village, siida. The commemorative coin is designed by Inka Kangasniemi, a member of the Inari Sami people.

Jonathan Swift gulliver's travels Jonathan Swift les voyages de Gulliver
Jonathan Swift, né le 30 novembre 1667 à Dublin, en Irlande, et mort le 19 octobre 1745 dans la même ville est un écrivain, satiriste, essayiste, pamphlétaire politique anglo-irlandais. Il est aussi poète et clerc et à ce titre il a été doyen de la Cathédrale Saint-Patrick de Dublin.
Il est célèbre pour avoir écrit Les Voyages de Gulliver. Swift est probablement le plus grand satiriste en prose de la langue anglaise1. Il publie ses œuvres en usant de pseudonymes comme Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff et M. B. Drapier, ou même anonymement. Il est connu enfin pour deux styles de satire, la satire horacienne et la satire juvénalienne. Il fut membre du Scriblerus Club.
